New to enteral feeding?

Proper nutrition is essential to maintaining our bodies’ health, growth and ability to heal. There are various medical conditions that could lead to enteral nutrition support, which is the delivery of nutrients to the body through the gastrointestinal tract.

Everyone needs food to live. Sometimes a person cannot eat any food or cannot eat enough food because of an illness, difficulties in swallowing, or some type of surgery that interferes with eating. In these situations, nutrition must be supplied in a different way. If a person cannot eat by mouth, but their stomach and/or intestines are still working, one potential way to deliver nutrients is called “enteral nutrition” or “tube feeding”.

A feeding tube is a medical device used for individuals who are unable to obtain their proper caloric intake by traditional/oral means. There are many different types of feeding tubes available based upon the patient’s needs. Your healthcare professional will assist you in determining the best type of alternative feeding for your situation.  For instance, a gastrostomy tube, also known as a G-Tube, may be inserted through the abdominal wall to provide direct access to the stomach for feeding. A G-Tube is a convenient and effective means for delivering nutritional formulas (food) to the body.

New to bowel management?

When a patient is suffering from constipation or fecal incontinence, his/her doctor will typically recommend lifestyle changes such as a diet that is high in fiber and/or the regular use of laxatives (taken orally or as a suppository). Another treatment option is an enema. The type of enema that most people are familiar with is a retrograde enema; this means the irrigation fluid is administered from the “bottom up” (the fluid is administered into the anus).

For patients with severe constipation or incontinence, dietary changes and retrograde enemas may not be sufficient. These patients may need what is known as an Antegrade Continence Enema (ACE): Antegrade (ante = before), Continence (self-control), Enema (infusion of fluid).

During the ACE, irrigation fluid is administered into the beginning of the large intestine (also known as the large bowel or colon) and allowed to flush from the “top down”. ACE is typically recommended for patients who have not responded to conservative treatments but are in need of a solution.

G-JET® Gastric-Jejunal Button Resources

A gastric-jejunal feeding tube, such as the AMT G-JET® Button, allows a patient to be fed directly into the jejunum, the second part of the intestine. It is inserted through the abdominal wall and stomach for direct access to the jejunum. With the G-JET® Button, caregivers or the patient can provide nutritional formulas to patients who can not tolerate stomach feeding.

The AMT G-JET® Button is a low profile feeding tube that offers great advancements over other G-J products on the market. It also provides safety mechanisms to help prevent misconnections. These safety measures include identification information printed clearly on the mutually exclusive ports, port covers with safety plugs, a glow-in-the-dark feeding port, and anti-kink technology in the jejunal section of the device that is MR conditional – safe to use in the MRI environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

AMT has provided this information as an educational resource tool. This is not intended as a substitute for professional medical care. Your FIRST source of information should be your healthcare provider.

What is Enteral Nutrition?

Enteral Nutrition (EN) is the delivery of nutrients to the body using the gastrointestinal tract or digestive system. Your digestive system is made up of several hollow organs joined as a long tube or pathway through your body.

Digestion begins in your mouth, through chewing the food you intake into smaller pieces which are then swallowed and passed down your esophagus. The esophagus carries the food from your mouth to your stomach. Once in the stomach, the food gets broken down into its main nutrients. These nutrients then pass into your small intestine where they are absorbed into the bloodstream. Once through your small intestine, the remaining material passes into your large intestine where excess liquid is absorbed leaving solid waste product behind to be passed out of your body.

Various medical conditions may make it difficult or impossible for you to eat orally, denying your body of essential nutrients. In such cases, your healthcare provider will select the best type of alternative feeding for your situation.

What type of Enteral Nutrition devices does AMT offer?

Gastrostomy Tube, also known as a G-tube, may be inserted through the abdominal wall to provide direct access to the stomach for feeding. AMT’s G-tube is called the MiniONE®.

Gastric-Jejunal Tube, also known as a G-J tube, may be inserted through the abdominal wall into and through the stomach to provide direct access to the jejunum, which is the second part of the small intestine. AMT’s Gastric-Jejunal tube is called the G-JET®.

G-tube or a G-J tube is a convenient and effective means for delivering nutritional formulas to the body. These nutritional formulas are either commercially available or homemade using a food processor. A healthcare provider will prescribe the proper feeding procedure, formula, and amount of water to most effectively feed you.

What's the difference between low profile and traditional length devices?

Low Profile – AMT offers a wide variety of Low Profile G-tubes for both children and adults. These devices are designed to sit flush against the skin and can be concealed under garments easily allowing the patient a wide range of motion.

Traditional Length – AMT has three main Traditional Length G-tubes. These devices are placed through the abdominal wall and have an adjustable external bolster. This adjustable external bolster minimizes surface contact with the skin, allowing tissue to breathe and can be adjusted up to 10cm in length. Tradition length devices extend from the abdominal wall up to 10cm and are not flush with the skin. Traditional Length devices are sometimes referred to as Standard Length devices.
