Low Profile Suprapubic Catheter

What is a Suprapubic Catheter?

A suprapubic catheter (SPC) is a tube that healthcare providers place or prescribe for patient or caregiver use to drain urine from the urinary bladder when one cannot do so on their own. Unlike a urethral catheter, which is inserted into the urethra and guided up to the bladder, an SPC accesses the bladder from a small incision in one’s lower abdomen.

A healthcare provider may recommend a suprapubic catheter for the below conditions:

  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Prostate cancer
  • Prostate enlargement
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Lower body paralysis
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease

Suprapubic catheters may be recommended if one requires long-term use of a catheter.

Frequently Asked Questions

AMT has provided this information as an educational resource tool. This is not intended as a substitute for professional medical care. Your FIRST source of information should be your healthcare provider.

Why is my doctor recommending a suprapubic catheter?

Healthcare providers use suprapubic catheters (SPC) to drain urine from one’s bladder when they cannot urinate on their own. Conditions that may cause difficulty urinating can vary from patient to patient and could include:

  • Prostate enlargement (BPH)
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Urethral stricture
  • Multiple sclerosis

Healthcare providers may recommend an SPC for long-term use or if urethral surgery is planned.

What is a suprapubic catheter?

A suprapubic catheter (SPC) is a tube that healthcare providers use to drain urine from the urinary bladder when one cannot urinate on their own.

Unlike urethral catheters, an SPC is not placed in the urethra and is instead placed directly into the urinary bladder through a surgical site (stoma) in the lower abdomen.

What are the benefits of a low profile SPC compared to a traditional SPC?

Traditional SPCs, such as a Foley catheter, have a long portion external to the abdomen which is not removable and needs to be secured to prevent dangling.  The MiniSPC™ Button rests closely to the abdomen and allows you to connect a Drainage Set (extension) to the device to divert urine to a urinary collection device or toilet only when you need to drain the bladder.

With the Drainage Set disconnected, the MiniSPC™ button that remains is continent and more discreet than a traditional SPC.

How do I take care of my MiniSPC™ Button at home?

The stoma area should be cleansed daily with mild soap and water. The stoma site should be kept clean and dry at all times.

Does AMT sell urinary drainage bags?

No, AMT does not currently sell urinary drainage bags.

Does my MiniSPC™ Button need to be periodically exchanged for a new button?

For optimal performance, it is recommended that the MiniSPC™ Button be changed every 28 days or as often as indicated by your healthcare professional. Proactive replacement of the device will help ensure optimal functionality and will help prevent unexpected device failure.

What sizes do you offer in the MiniSPC™ Button?

We offer 14, 16, and 18F MiniSPC™ Buttons, with stoma lengths ranging from 0.8 to 10.0 cm.

What components are included in the kit?

  • MiniSPC™ Button
  • Drainage Set (Choice of 12″ Drainage Set or 24″ Set. Part number S1-1221 (12″) or S1-2421(24″): bolus, right-angle)
  • 5cc or 10cc syringe
  • Introducer
  • Gauze
  • Lube packet

Do I need a prescription to order a MiniSPC™ Button?

Yes, a prescription is required.

What is the MR status of the MiniSPC™ Button?

The MiniSPC™ Button is considered MR Conditional, which means the tube has metal present within it – but has undergone testing to show that, under specific conditions, it is safe for a patient with the MiniSPC™ Button to have an MRI. The specific MRI conditions are listed in the device Instructions for Use (IFU).
