McKenzie got her tube when she was three and a half years old due to aspiration and feeding difficulty. She also has a deformity were her epiglottis is shaped like a moon instead of a “U” so her airway wasn’t being protected all the way. I would thicken her fluids and food but it wasn’t enough. She was always sick and not growing. The thought that my child was going to get a feeding tube was devastating. I felt like I failed my baby girl. I felt I didn’t do enough for her.
I could not believe how much she blossomed after her feeding tube and fundoplication surgery. She was growing and no longer was getting sick respiratory-wise. The doctors and I made the best decision for her. She is so proud of her tube. She really doesn’t think she is any different than anyone else. She does everything. We go to water-parks near home and she goes with her button. She does dance and her tube never slows her down. She has been in gymnastics as well and we just put a band around her to protect it.
When people have asked, she just tells them she “just drinks a little different.” She is so awesome! She knows that her tube has made a big difference in her life. She has told me she wants people to know that you can look completely normal and just need a little help with eating and you can do everything! I know without it she wouldn’t be here. She is going on 6 years with her feeding tube.
We started out with Mic-Key® and hated it. Then I started looking up different tubes and I found AMT. I liked how the balloon was shaped like an apple and not so round. Hers was always leaking and that would cause infections. I took her into her GI and told him I wanted to switch and he said okay. I have had no problems since. Her site always looks good. Even her GI doctor can’t believe how well it looks.
