Breast Augmentation Removal: How to Integrate Explant Express®
When a surgical team considers a new device for the operating room (OR), they’ll first have two questions: Does it solve a real problem? And, how much does it change what we already do?
Indicated specifically for ruptured breast implant explantation, the FDA-cleared Explant Express® was designed with integration in mind. It addresses a longstanding challenge in breast augmentation removal while working with equipment already found in most operating rooms.
Watch it in action here (viewer discretion is advised).
Works with Equipment Already in the OR
The Explant Express® connects directly to standard OR wall suction, which is already available in most operating rooms. Surgeons can extract most ruptured implants at 300 mmHg or less, well within the capabilities of standard suction systems. For facilities that do not use wall suction, the device is also compatible with liposuction machines.
The device is sterile, single-use, and can fit into existing procedural workflows without requiring capital equipment purchases or additional infrastructure. It is also a billable line item.
Put It on Every Explant Tray
Sometimes, surgeons don’t realize an implant has ruptured until an explant procedure starts. Intraoperative findings do not always match preoperative imaging. The simplest approach is to include an Explant Express® on every explant tray.
When there is a confirmed or anticipated rupture, the workflow is straightforward. The scrub technician assembles the device and has it ready on the table. Following capsulotomy, the surgeon introduces the device into the breast pocket, positions it against the implant shell, and applies suction. Silicone gel is removed directly into the device’s collection chamber in a matter of seconds,¹ helping contain material before it spreads throughout the surgical field.
No advanced training is necessary. Implementation requires minimal preparation beyond reviewing the Instructions for Use.
Compatible with Multiple Implant Generations
The Explant Express® is designed for compatibility across implant generations, including smooth and textured shells, as well as older non-cohesive and newer cohesive silicone gel implants.
There’s no need to evaluate compatibility case by case based on a patient’s implant history. The Explant Express® works across a wide range of explant procedures without modifying the workflow based on implant type.
Designed to Fix Existing Workflows
The Explant Express® is designed to complement, not replace, existing breast augmentation removal protocols. It fits between capsulotomy and pocket management, providing a dedicated solution for silicone retrieval and containment within the existing workflow.
Following bulk silicone removal, surgeons may continue with their preferred irrigation, inspection, and pocket management approach. Teams that incorporate pocket irrigation may also use a clindamycin phosphate rinse to help address residual silicone after extraction.
One dedicated step for silicone retrieval. The rest of the workflow stays the same. Learn more about the Explant Express®.
